Boiler Servicing

What is a service?

Whilst a gas safety check assesses the basic safety of a gas appliance a service will consist of a full check of a gas appliance and the engineer is likely to take the appliance apart to inspect it. The engineer will assess the physical condition of the appliance, installation pipework, air vents and any flues for deterioration. They will carry out performance tests and take any necessary remedial action.

Appliances should be serviced regularly in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. Servicing your gas appliances regularly will make sure they are safe to use. It will also maintain your appliances efficiency and performance.

Signs that your appliances need servicing?

Gas appliances should be serviced regularly but if you notice any of the warning signs below you should arrange for a Gas Safe registered engineer to service your appliance as soon as possible:

  • Your gas appliance is not working properly
  • Your appliance is burning with a lazy yellow flame instead of a crisp blue flame
  • You can see black marks or stains on or around your gas appliances
  • The pilot light keeps going out
  • There is increased condensation in the room

To ensure that your boiler is properly serviced, We provide a technician who is qualified in Gas & Oil fired boiler servicing. Gas Safe & OFTECregistered engineers are fully trained and regularly checked, to make sure that their safety procedures are up-to-date.

Boiler Repairs

What if my engineer identifies a problem with my gas appliance?

Once our engineer diagnosis the Boiler fault, the part or parts may need to be ordered and fitted as agreed the next day or as soon as possible, this will be discussed with you at the time.

All Gas Safe registered engineers follow the Gas Industry Unsafe Situations Procedure (GIUSP) when assessing the risks of an unsafe gas appliance. The guidance provides 'best practice' advice to Gas Safe registered engineers on how they should deal with various gas safety concerns which may affect your safety.

Power Flushing

What is a Powerflush?

A powerflush is a cleansing process which aims to remove deposits of sludge, rust and any other debris from your central heating system. These contaminants, if left, can seriously affect the efficiency of a heating system and in severe cases a powerflush is the only option available.

Signs that you might need a powerflush

There are a number of signs to look for before deciding to go ahead with the powerflush process. These include cold areas on radiators, excessive noise from the boiler or the heating system pump, discoloured water when you bleed the radiators and the slow warming of the heating system.

It is also recommended that the powerflush process is carried out if you intend to connect a new boiler replacement to an old heating system. This is because most new boilers are condensing boilers and any contaminants already present in the heating system can quickly damage the internal pipe work of the new boiler.

Cost and time needed for a powerflush

Most powerflushing professionals state that a full powerflush will take around 6 hours to complete. This is an estimate though as some badly affected heating systems will require more time whilst others may be finished quicker.

The price of a full system powerflush varies with location and the size of the heating system. This can range from £350 up to £1200+. For a no obligation quote please contact us.

Conclusion - Powerflushing

It is important that your central heating system is as efficient as it can be at all times and although a powerflush can be an expensive process, with regards to your heating bills it can also save you a lot of money, for best results we reccommend having a powerflush in conjunction with a complete boiler service.

This process is clean and safe when completed by one of our professional engineers and can quickly eliminate cold radiators, noisy boilers and pumps thus increasing the effciency of your heating system.

Air Source Heat Pumps - (ASHP)

What are Air Source Heat Pumps?

Air source heat pumps use basic thermodynamic principles to convert latent heat contained within the air we breathe into heat energy that can be used to provide heating and hot water. This 'ambient heat' is replenished by the sun making our heat pumps both effective and environmentally friendly.

How they work

There are two basic types of air source heat pump – 'air to air' and 'air to water'. Grant Aerona ASHE heat pumps use an air to water system which utilises heat energy captured from the air in 'wet' heating system radiators or underfloor heating. The process uses the same vapour/compression cycle that extracts heat in a domestic fridge. A refrigerant with a low boiling point is exposed to external air temperatures in an evaporator. The liquid boils off to a gas and absorbs the latent heat energy of the air. This gas is then compressed increasing the heat content in the refrigerant, before passing through a heat exchanger where it condenses back to a liquid state while transferring the heat to the water of the heating system. The liquid refrigerant is then re-circulated through the evaporator and the cycle is repeated.

Fit for the future

With the recent fluctuations in price and supply of fossil fuels, Grant air source heat pumps offer both an environmentally and economically sustainable alternative. Home heating in the UK accounts for approximately 30% of CO2 emissions and the heat source used ASHE heat pumps is entirely renewable which helps reduce the amount of harmful greenhouse gases being released into the atmosphere and, in so doing, lowers the carbon footprint of the household.

Currently we use two different suppliers Grant UK & Calorex, Please contact us for more information and advice on ASHP.

Landlord Gas Safety

Do you live in a rented property?

Did you know that your landlord has legal responsibilities when it comes to gas safety?

If you rent a property, ask your landlord for a copy of the current Gas Safety record. This record shows that gas appliances have had an annual gas safety check by our Gas Safe registered engineer.

Landlords must also maintain gas appliances, so check the date when yours were last serviced as well.

Are you a landlord?

Landlords must be able to provide their tenants with an up-to-date Gas Safety record.

By law, landlords must have all gas appliances serviced regularly, normally once a year by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Our Gas Safe registered engineer will provide a Gas Safety record upon completion of the check.

Gas Cookers & Appliances

Gas appliances that are left unchecked could be dangerous and leaking carbon monoxide

All of your gas appliances, including your gas boiler, gas cooker and gas fire should be safety checked once a year and serviced regularly according to the manufacturer's instructions. If you do not have your gas appliances regularly serviced and safety checked by a Gas Safe registered engineer you could be putting you and your family at risk and in possible danger of carbon monoxide poisoning.

What is a gas safety check?

A gas safety check involves our Gas Safe registered engineer inspecting your gas appliances. They will check the appliance is working correctly and will check the following four areas:

  • Gas appliances are on the right setting and burning correctly with the correct operating pressure
  • Harmful gases are being removed from the appliance safely to the air outside
  • You can see black marks or stains on or around your gas appliances
  • That any ventilation routes are clear and working properly
  • All the safety devices are working

The check will identify any defects which require remedial work. You should have a gas safety check every year. If you are a landlord this is the law.
